IFS for LGBTI+ people
Therapeutic support that understands the specific complexities of growing up and living as an LGBTI+ person
As LGBTI+ people, we often go through a long journey of accepting our identity and the process of coming out. But we also experience other deep layers: the parts we learned to silence to function in a world that didn’t see us, the protective structures we developed to stay safe, and the price this takes on our ability to live with confidence and harmony.
IFS allows us to explore the parts formed during that process and the imprint they leave on the way we are, relate, and feel.
Some areas we can explore
The parts that protect you When you grow up knowing something about you could be rejected, you develop very sophisticated parts that protect you. These are parts that “scan” every room before entering, adjust your expression depending on who you’re with, and keep your vulnerability well shielded.
Feeling not enough You may have a younger part that felt “there is something wrong with me.” These parts are often set aside or silenced, and they need to be heard and welcomed.
The cost of belonging to a group Belonging is a human need, and LGBTI+ people often learn to manage it in unsafe contexts. But even within the LGBTI+ community, the same pressure can arise: being a certain way, fitting a specific narrative.
Relationship with the body and sexuality Sexuality can be both a place of freedom and disconnection. By exploring the parts that move you sexually, you can understand them better and live your sexuality from a more integrated and authentic place.
Couple dynamics LGBTI+ people may carry emotional wounds that appear in the intimacy of a relationship. Each relationship has its own shape, and within a person, parts may feel in harmony with the relationship while others do not. The lack of role models can make navigating the different phases of a relationship more difficult. With IFS, we can listen to and understand these dynamics with curiosity and compassion.
Reconnecting with your own essence Through inner listening and recognition of the different parts that make us up, we can reconnect with who we truly are, beneath adaptations and defenses, and reclaim that genuine way of being in the world.
